TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of protestors continue their attempt to break through the parliament complex gate well into Friday night, August 29, 2025. The protest today, which escalated after the death of Affan Kurniawan, a ride-share driver who was run over by a police mobile brigade car, has been ongoing since 03:00 p.m. local time.
Until 9:00 p.m., the protesters are still attempting to get into the parliament complex by pulling down the iron grilles with ropes.
They have successfully brought down a portion of the gate using this method, but this section was then guarded by soldiers from the Indonesian national armed forces (TNI).
At another section of the gate, people are attempting to break through using stones and other hard objects. They are trying to destroy the wall attached to the iron grilles in order to bring down the gate.
Some demonstrators occasionally throw firecrackers at the police line. The area around the parliament gate, which has become the focal point of the rally, is guarded by soldiers at the front line. Police officers in black attire with shields appear to be behind the soldiers.
Protesters are also burning various objects, including road dividers and trees, in front of the parliament gate. There are at least four fire points in the front area of the parliament complex. Two of them are located on the inner city toll road, which has been closed to traffic.
According to Tempo's observation, the protestors are arriving sporadically. Some are wearing motorcycle taxi driver jackets, while others are in casual wear. There are no students wearing uniforms or university graduates in their university jackets.
One protester recounted that the crowd began filling the area in front of the Parliament Complex around 3:00 p.m. The demonstrator, representing a civilian group, especially housewives, speaking on conditions of anonymity, said her community is raising several demands.
They demand that the police thoroughly investigate the death of Affan Kurniawan. They also requested that the identity of the police officer who hit Affan be revealed.
