TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and transitional Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa have agreed to a ceasefire.
In a statement reported by Anadolu, the Syrian presidential office urged all parties "to fully comply with this decision, immediately halt all combat operations in all areas, ensure the protection of civilians, and guarantee the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid."
The Syrian presidential office warned that "any violation of this decision will be considered a blatant breach of national sovereignty and will be met with the necessary legal measures according to the constitution and prevailing laws."
They also appealed to all parties to "allow the Syrian state, its institutions, and forces the space to responsibly apply this ceasefire, ensuring stability and an end to the bloodshed."
This statement followed the ceasefire announcement by U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy for Syria, Thomas Barrack, just hours earlier.
"Israeli Prime Minister @Netanyahu and Syrian President @SyPresidency supported by the U.S.A. @SecRubio have agreed to a ceasefire embraced by Türkiye, Jordan and its neighbors," Barrack posted on X on Saturday, July 19, 2025, as reported by Al Jazeera.
Barrack further said that the U.S. called upon the Druze, Bedouin, and Sunni communities to "put down their weapons and together with other minorities build a new and united Syrian identity in peace and prosperity with its neighbours."
As of now, there have been no official comments from Syrian or Israeli officials regarding the ceasefire.
Tensions in Suwayda Amid Recent Israeli Airstrikes
An unnamed Israeli official told reporters on Friday that, given the "ongoing instability in southwest Syria," Israel has agreed to permit "limited entry of the [Syrian] internal security forces into Suwayda district for the next 48 hours."
This development comes after Israel launched a massive airstrike on Wednesday, targeting the Syrian Ministry of Defense in central Damascus and hitting Syrian government forces in the Suwayda region.
Israel's airstrikes struck over 160 sites across four Syrian regions, Suwayda, Daraa, Damascus, and Damascus countryside, resulting in three deaths and 34 injuries in the capital alone.
