TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono is scheduled to attend 19 key meetings as part of the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM) and Post Ministerial Conference (PMC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on July 8-11, 2025. The meetings include the Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting, ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), and bilateral meetings with partner countries.
The Director General of ASEAN Cooperation at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro, said Indonesia's active participation reflects a real commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity in the Southeast Asian region. "It alignswith our national interest," he said at a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs complex on Thursday, July 3, 2025.
Chair of the ASEAN-Australia Meeting
Sugiono is also slated to chair several agendas during the upcoming AMM-PMC meetings, one of which is the ASEAN-Australia Ministerial Meeting, as Indonesia currently holds the position of ASEAN Coordinator for Australia.
Furthermore, Sugiono will attend meetings with major ASEAN partners such as China, the United States, Japan, Russia, South Korea, the European Union, and Australia, as well as the East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting and ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF).
Diplomatic Agendas
The series of meetings will commence on July 8 with sessions between the ASEAN Foreign Ministers and the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), as well as the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Treaty meeting.
The plenary and retreat of the 58th AMM will take place on July 9, followed by the PMC and the ASEAN Plus Three (APT) on July 10. The forum will conclude on July 11 with the ARF and East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting.
As the Chair of ASEAN 2025, Malaysia will also host the Conference on Cooperation Among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (SEAPAD), which Sugiono will also attend. Indonesia is scheduled to participate in the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC).
Maintaining ASEAN Centrality Amid Global Crises
According to Sidharto, this meeting presents an important opportunity for Southeast Asia to voice its stance on global developments. Indonesia's presence in this forum also serves as momentum to maintain ASEAN's centrality amidst increasingly complex geopolitical dynamics.
He added, "As it is known, there are significant dynamics in international political maneuvering." In addition to the multilateral forums, Sugiono is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with several partner countries. Sidharto mentioned that the bilateral meetings with partner countries are still in the finalization stage of scheduling.
A total of 34 countries, comprising 10 ASEAN member states and 24 partner countries, will be in attendance. All sessions will be held in plenary, retreat, and separate meeting formats. The forum is expected to result in a joint communique from the ASEAN Foreign Ministers.
