TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Home Affairs, Muhammad Tito Karnavian, stated that five areas in West Sumatra have returned to normal after being hit by flash floods and landslides at the end of November 2025.

Tito said that 16 of the 19 regencies/cities in West Sumatra were affected by ecological disasters. "Five of them have returned to normal," said Tito during the coordination meeting of the Task Force for Accelerating Rehabilitation and Reconstruction after the Disasters in the Sumatra Region, at the Ministry of Home Affairs office in Central Jakarta on Monday, January 26, 2026.

The five areas that are starting to recover are South Solok Regency, Bukittinggi City, Padang Panjang City, Payakumbuh City, and South Pesisir Regency. "Almost all of them are doing well, although there are a few minor issues," said Tito.

Furthermore, six regencies/cities are approaching normalcy. These six areas are Solok City, Mentawai Islands, Padang City, Pariaman City, Lima Puluh Kota Regency, and West Pasaman Regency.

During the same occasion, Tito also presented the current situation in North Sumatra Province. According to Tito, five of the 18 affected regencies/cities have returned to normal. Medan City, Nias Regency, Langkat Regency, Asahan Regency, and Batu Bara Regency are among them.

"It's almost completely back to normal," Tito said. Meanwhile, 11 regencies in North Sumatra are approaching normalcy. "Some require special attention, although this does not deny the need for attention to others, namely Central Tapanuli and North Tapanuli," said Tito.

The former Chief of the Indonesian National Police mentioned that there are still obstacles to road repairs in South Tapanuli.

In addition, the Batang Tor and Garoga rivers also require attention. "There is still a huge amount of sedimentation there. If we look at the rivers that need attention, it's Central Tapanuli and South Tapanuli, those are the main ones," he said.

In addition to North Sumatra and West Sumatra, Tito also revealed the situation in Aceh Province. Of the 18 affected districts/cities in Aceh, only Aceh Besar Regency has recovered.

Meanwhile, nine regencies and cities are approaching normalcy. "We really need to work harder in Aceh because only one area has returned to normal," said Tito.
