'Cuba Is Next': Trump Hints at U.S. Action After Iran

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday, March 27, that Cuba could be the next target of U.S. action after Iran, while touting what he described as the success of recent American military operations in Venezuela and Iran.

Reuters reported that Trump made the remarks during a speech at an investment forum in Miami, saying, “Cuba is next,” though he did not outline any specific plans.

I built this great military. I said, 'You'll never have to use it,' but sometimes you have to use it. And Cuba is next, by the way,” Trump said at the Future Investment Initiative, a Saudi-backed business conference.

He then appeared to walk back the remark, adding, “But pretend I didn't say that. Please, pretend I didn't. Please, please, please, media, please disregard that statement.” Reports said the conference was held in Miami.

Trump’s comments came as tensions between Washington and Havana remain high, with the U.S. president recently increasing pressure on Cuba amid the island’s worsening economic and energy crisis.

Earlier in March, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said Havana was willing to discuss a wide range of issues with the United States, but insisted that Cuba’s sovereignty and political system were not open to negotiation. Reuters reported on March 21 that Cuban officials firmly rejected any suggestion that the country’s political system or the presidency could be part of talks with Washington.

Speaking to Spanish-language outlet Canal Red in Havana, Díaz-Canel said issues such as foreign investment, migration flows, drug trafficking, counterterrorism, environmental protection, as well as science and education, could all be discussed with the United States.

We can discuss everything, but our sovereignty must be respected. Our independence and political system are never open to discussion,” he said.

Díaz-Canel has also confirmed that Cuba has recently held talks with the U.S. government aimed at resolving bilateral differences through dialogue, amid mounting economic pressure and a U.S.-imposed energy blockade that has worsened fuel shortages and power outages on the island.
