Celebrating 75 Years of Diplomatic Relations, Danish Embassy Holds Ballet Performance in Jakarta

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Embassy of Denmark in Jakarta, Indonesia, hosted a ballet performance entitled "Bournonville Celebration" to commemorate 75 years of diplomatic relations with Indonesia at Usmar Ismail Hall, South Jakarta, on Monday, June 30, 2025.

This ballet performance is part of the August Bournonville Summer Academy in Jakarta activities, under the direction of two renowned Danish ballet maestros, Frank Andersen and Eva Kloborg.

They are widely known for their dedication to preserving the classic Bournonville ballet style. The performance also featured Jon Axel Fransson, the principal dancer of the Royal Danish Ballet.

The Danish Ambassador to Indonesia, Sten Frimodt Nielsen, said the two countries have a long history of cultural cooperation. He mentioned that this year is a special moment to strengthen those ties through art.

"We are very pleased to support this performance as part of our 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations," said Nielsen.

The Ballet Gala featured the premiere of the "William Tell Pas De Deux" dance in Indonesia, as well as excerpts from the iconic "La Sylphide", and various Bournonville heritage dances.

All of these performances were carried out by young Indonesian dancers who had undergone intensive training with the Danish maestros. The entire performance was also accompanied by live music.

Frank Andersen, also a former artistic director of the Royal Danish Ballet, expressed his joy in being able to attend Indonesia and contribute to the ballet stage.

"We are also proud to be a small part of the celebration of the 75th diplomatic relations between Denmark and Indonesia," he said.

The organizer and founder of the August Bournonville Summer Academy in Jakarta, Wenny Halim, expressed her joy in being able to hold this performance again since it was last held in 2019, together with Frank and Eva.

Wenny said that she intentionally organized the celebration performance for the ballet and art community in Indonesia, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Denmark and Indonesia.

"The essence of Bournonville ballet is joie de vivre - the joy of living - and there is no more beautiful way to celebrate this moment than to recall that joy, which will always touch the heart of every generation," she said.

According to Tempo's observation, the event lasted for 2 hours, from 19:40 to 21:40. The event was also attended by the parents of the ballet dancers in the audience.

This performance was also supported by various leading ballet communities and schools in Indonesia, including Ballet Sumber Cipta, Cicilia Ballet School, Gitanada Music School, Baju Ballet.com, Sjuman Instrument, Myca Florist, and Her World Indonesia.
