TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Leaders of the BRICS countries officially adopted the Rio Declaration at the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday, July 6, 2025.
Under Brazil's leadership, the declaration contains the collective commitment of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) to strengthen multilateralism and reform global governance in order to create a fairer, more inclusive, and more democratic world order.
In the dozens of pages of the document, BRICS calls for a reform of the international system, which is deemed unable to reflect the geopolitical reality of the 21st century.
"We reaffirm our commitment to reform and improve global governance by promoting a more fair, equal, effective, representative, and democratic international and multilateral system," the official statement quoted.
The declaration also highlights the importance of the United Nations (UN) and urges comprehensive reform of the organization, particularly the Security Council, to be able to address global challenges fairly and inclusively.
BRICS also advocates for increased representation of developing countries, including those from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, to play a greater role in global affairs.
An important momentum in this summit is the official welcoming of Indonesia as a full member of BRICS. In addition, BRICS also acknowledges several countries as partners, including Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Nigeria, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.
In addition to geopolitical aspects, the declaration also covers cooperation in various strategic fields. BRICS has adopted three main initiatives, namely the BRICS Climate Finance Framework Declaration, the Declaration on Global Governance of Artificial Intelligence, and the launch of the BRICS Partnership to Combat Socially Determined Diseases.
"These initiatives reflect our joint efforts to promote inclusive and sustainable solutions to various urgent global issues," the leaders said in the document.
