BMKG Reports Earthquake Data for Bekasi Regency, West Java

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 2.7 occurred in Bekasi, West Java, on Monday morning, January 26, 2026. According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), the earthquake source was on land.

The earthquake's epicenter was located at 6.38 degrees south latitude and 107.17 degrees east longitude. "The location is on land, 2 kilometers south of the center of Bekasi Regency," said the Head of BMKG Regional II, Hartanto, in a written statement on Monday, January 26, 2026.

The earthquake was considered shallow with a depth of 7 kilometers. According to Hartanto, the earthquake was caused by activity along an active fault.

Residents in the Cikarang and Karawang areas felt tremors from the earthquake, which registered an intensity of II-III on the MMI scale. This indicates that the vibrations were felt only by a few people and caused hanging objects to sway, and were also felt inside the house as if a truck was passing by.

According to BMKG, there have been no reports of building damage resulting from the earthquake so far. Based on BMKG monitoring until 09:00 AM local time, there have been no indications of aftershock earthquake activities.

BMKG is urging the public to remain calm and not be influenced by unverifiable rumors.

An earthquake of significant strength previously occurred in Bekasi on August 20, 2025. At that time, a magnitude 4.7 earthquake occurred precisely at 19:54 local time. The epicenter was also on land, 19 kilometers southeast of Bekasi Regency. The source quake had a depth of 10 kilometers.

"It was a shallow earthquake triggered by a back arc thrust fault source in West Java (West Java back arc thrust)," BMKG stated at the time.

The tremor had the greatest impact at the III-IV MMI level in the Bekasi area. At this level, the vibrations could be felt inside the house as if a truck were passing by. Many people inside the house felt them, as did a few people outside. Pottery broke, windows and doors creaked, and walls made noises.

The most severe damage occurred in the southern Karawang area.
