TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian women's badminton team advanced to the semifinals of the 2025 SEA Games by defeating Myanmar 3-0 in the quarterfinals in Pathum Thani, Thailand, on Sunday, December 7, 2025.
Putri Kusuma Wardani, who played in the first women's singles, contributed the first point by defeating Thet Htar Thuzar. The Indonesian badminton player, ranked seventh in the world, faced tough competition and had to play three games to secure her victory with scores of 17-21, 20-22, 13-21.
Putri admitted feeling pressured when her opponent played well in the first game, a trend that continued into the second. "When I was quite far behind in the second game, but with the support of my friends and Coach Imam (Tohari), I kept trying not to lose," she said, as quoted from the PBSI (All Indonesia Badminton Association) media statement on Sunday.
Thet Htar Thuzar was not a stranger to Putri. She had met her before and acknowledged Thet's strength in hand, strokes, and forward play. "In the second game, when I was behind, I just tried to get the shuttlecock in play, because throughout the game from the first and second games, many silly mistakes were made that should not have happened," she explained.
Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, a senior, played in the second match because her ranking was three levels below Putri's. She extended the lead by defeating Eaint Chit Phoo, 21-9, 21-7.
Gregoria felt comfortable playing and hoped that the victory in this inaugural match would motivate her to continue contributing points in Indonesia's upcoming matches. "I don't want to be easily satisfied because the opponents will become tougher, so I have to prepare even more," she said.
The women's doubles team, Rachel Allessya Rose / Febi Setianingrum, who recently won the Super 300 Australian Open 2025, sealed the victory by defeating Su Latt / Khaing Thin Zar in the third match, 21-10, 21-6.
"Today's match ended with our victory. I'm happy to contribute points and be the decider. This has always been our wish, to keep scoring for Indonesia," said Rachel.
Febi, competing in the SEA Games for the first time, had different feelings. "The desire to win is stronger with the support of friends. I'm happy for this opportunity," she said.
The Indonesian women's badminton team may face Malaysia in the 2025 SEA Games semifinals. However, the certainty of their opponent is pending the results of the quarterfinal match between Malaysia and Vietnam.
